the Lark in the Morning

And now we see why I showed you how to do the lark’s head stitch in my last post! Here’s a free stitch pattern for you, just in time for Valentine’s Day. This combination of yarnovers came up as part of a draft secret code stitch pattern I’m putting together. It’s not meant as secret code by itself though. I just lifted it out of a larger stitch pattern because I liked the little hearts. Secret: I don’t usually like hearts.

The Lark in the Morning is the title of a traditional, slightly bawdy, song.

Notes:

  • This is a stitch pattern such as might be found in a stitch dictionary. It is not a pattern for a finished object. You will need to add selvedges or some other form of knitted stitches to either side.
  • It is a multiple of 16 + 8 stitches and 8 rows.
  • I’ve made a stitch map for it.
  • Designers, please feel free to use this stitch in your patterns. I’d like credit but won’t be offended if people don’t give it.
  • If you like my posts like this, please consider supporting me on Patreon or donating with my Paypal tip jar in the sidebar. Thanks!

Abbreviations:

  • k: knit.
  • k2tog: knit 2 stitches together as if they were 1. (Right-leaning decrease)
  • k3tog: knit 3 stitches together as if they were 1. (Right-leaning double decrease)
  • Lark’s head: Drop one loop of the double yarnover from left needle. Purl 1 tbl and drop second loop of yarnover from the left needle, then reinsert left needle into the double yarnover from the back, and purl it through the front loop. Drop from left needle as lark’s head is complete. The two loops will be twisted in opposite directions, making a horizontal bar on the front. (Illustrated instructions here.)
  • ssk: slip each of the next 2 stitches as if to knit, then knit them together through the back loop. (Left-leaning decrease)
  • sssk: slip each of the next 3 stitches as if to knit, then knit them together through the back loop. (Left-leaning double decrease)
