Book Review: Norah Gaughan’s Knitted Cable Sourcebook

Norah Gaughan is well known for her cable designs, so it's a delight to have a book that is a combination of a stitch dictionary and a guide to her cable design process.

There's more than 150 cable stitch patterns in  Norah Gaughan's Knitted Cable Sourcebook, with both charted and written instructions. They range from basic to complex, and some of them are either reversible or look nice on both sides. I particularly like that she's come up with a way to define a gauge substitute for the cables so that it's possible to substitute one cable (or three) for another.

The cables are organized in a logical progression, so that you can see how one cable design might lead to another. There are also instructions for how to make the cables stand out more.

Finally, there are several designs in Norah Gaughan's inimitable style which use the cables, and which provide a canvas for substituting other cables from the book.

I think that this is a book for any knitter who wants to knit cables, from the cable knitter who wants another stitch dictionary, to the designer who wants some inspiration to design their own.

I bought this book.
