Mountain: a free needlework chart for any craft

The word of the month is mountain, suggested by Lara on Patreon.

I usually develop a complicated knitting stitch pattern for each word, but I also like to provide a basic chart for any craft that’s worked on a grid: beads, cross stitch, whatever. I also try to provide an image of the pattern repeated all over not as a chart. It doesn’t necessarily look like a finished object, but I just want to give a sense of it.

  • Designers, please feel free to use these designs in your patterns. I’d like credit but won’t be offended if people don’t give it.

Mountain: a knit-purl stitch pattern based on encoding the word as numbers.

Here’s just one example of what can be done with this chart. I turned the chart sideways and then pretended that each black square was a purl symbol in a knitting chart, so I purled them on the right side of the knitting and knit them on the wrong side, and the other way round for the white squares. (I turned the chart sideways because that way there were almost no black squares that were immediately above other black squares. This helps make the purl blips sit up on the surface of the knitting instead of receding as they would in ribbing.)
